Deciding on a Psoriatic Arthritis Treatment

If you have found yourself in the position of having been diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis you may be wondering what your options are for treatment. As with most ailments of a non life threatening kind there are two routes you could choose to take in finding a Psoriatic Arthritis Treatment, the self help kind or a prescribed method from your doctor. Most people will find that a combination of the two works best where as some cases will allow the sufferer to administer little or no treatment most of the time. It is up to you and your doctor to gauge your need and degree of suffering.

One of the key elements of self treatment is exercise. No one expects you to start running on arthritic joints but by doing gentle exercise on a regular basis you can greatly relieve the symptoms you suffer. In essence you want to focus on two areas, the first is to keep the joint flexible by doing range of motion exercises and the second is to strengthen the muscles around the affected joint. This will help give your affected joint a good support structure around it and the increased circulation can be greatly beneficial.

This treatment will also couple with a good relaxation treatment. By allowing your body to rest properly you will help in regeneration of the joint. Hot and cold can also be a good way to gain relief, cold ice baths to soak the joints and reduce swelling combined with a warm bath afterwards to ease the stiffness of your joints.

Relaxation

In terms of medical psoriatic arthritis treatments there are many options available some more severe than others, the most extreme of these is a full joint replacement which can be both painful and costly. At the less severe end of the scale there are medications that can be taken to help relieve the symptoms of psoriatic arthritis. One of the most common of these would be paracetamol prescribed as a painkiller. On top of this most prescriptions would also contain an anti inflammatory to help reduce any swelling that is present in the affected joints.

As a psoriatic arthritis treatment for milder cases the combination of pain filler and anti inflammatory is often enough to allow the patient to live as normal a life as possible without too much interruption into their routine. There are however other medical methods available through your doctor and as such if you feel that you are using a treatment that is no longer working then seeking professional advice is the best way to proceed.

Surgery is normally reserved for more severe cases and even in more mild cases where no other treatments seem to work it would only be used as a last possible option.
