Exercises for Chronic Neck Pain

When strengthening your neck muscles work up to performing the exercises with 1-set of 10 repetitions daily. Work slowly and don’t push through the pain.

Exercises for Neck Pain

Exercise 1: Neck Flexion Strengthening/Range-of-Motion Exercise

  • Lie on back
  • Lift head up off the floor
  • Tuck your chin towards chest and look at feet and then lower
  • Do this exercise slowly and without pain
  • Repeat 10 times

Exercise 2: Neck Extension Strengthening/Range-of-Motion Exercise

  • Lie facedown
  • Lift head up off the floor
  • Look upward and then lower
  • Do this exercise slowly and without pain
  • Repeat 10 times

Exercise 3: Neck Lateral Flexion Strengthening/Range-of-Motion Exercise

  • Lay on your right side
  • Right arm is outstretched, left arm is placed on floor in front of chest for balance
  • Lift head off the floor and then lower
  • Change sides and repeat
  • Do this exercise slowly and without pain
  • Repeat 10 times

Exercise 4: Neck Rotation Strengthening/Range-of-Motion Exercise

  • Lay your right side
  • Right arm is outstretched, left arm is place on floor in front of chest for balance
  • Raise head so left ear is moving back toward left shoulder and you are looking at the ceiling
  • Return head to horizontal position or looking straight ahead (not resting position)
  • Then rotate neck to look the right shoulder or the floor
  • Do this exercise slowly and without pain
  • Repeat 10 times

  • You have pain at the wrist or hand and experience numbness or tingling in the fingers
  • You have developed neck pain following a recent accident
  • You have developed neck pain headache recently
  • If you experience severe headaches that occurs for no apparent reason, never go away and are getting worse
  • If you experience severe headaches that are accompanied by nausea and dizziness
