Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma Causes

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which affects the protective membrane which covers the internal organs of the body. The lungs is the most probable place where mesothelioma forms, followed by the abdominal cavity, the heart or the testis. Unfortunately, it can take even 50 years for symptoms to emerge, as the mesothelioma lies dormant most of the time for periods between 15 and 50 years.

Exposure to asbestos is the cause occurring the most. People who are the most vulnerable to developing mesothelioma are those exposed to asbestos because of their profession and working environment.  Even a minor exposure to asbestos is a risk factor for developing this form of cancer. Even the simple washing of someone’s clothes, if that person has been “contaminated” with asbestos, can have later effects and cause the emerge of mesothelioma.

Asbestos is quite present in the surrounding environment and this is why most people overlook it. More tragically, most people aren’t even aware of the hazardous material they are exposed to. Asbestos is present in flooring materials, insulation materials, brake linings, brake pads, cement and roof shingles. Car mechanics and construction workers are, therefore, at the highest risk of getting mesothelioma at some point in their lives.

Asbestos may also be found in some food sand water supplies and private and commercial buildings. You don’t need to be directly exposed to asbestos in order to be at risk, it is enough to stay around other persons who are usually exposed to this substance.

What it makes it really dangerous is the lack of symptoms of mesothelioma in the early stages, leading to a too late diagnosis, when not much remains to be done. Many symptoms mislead because they res amble much to the ones of other diseases which are less threatening. People can actually leave for years with the disease and not know it until it is already too late.
